Family History

Arthur George Baker was born on 23rd April 1888 at Ditchingham, Norfolk, he was baptised at the parish church at Ditchingham on 3rd June 1888 and was the son of the late Edward a coal miner and Sarah Baker née Felgate. His father Edward was born in 1855 at Hedenham, Norfolk, he died in 1905 aged 49 yrs, his mother Sarah Ann Felgate was born in 1857 at Loddon, Norfolk, they were married on 1st November 1882 in Norfolk and had the following children, Robert William b1884, Nellie Maria b1886 and Arthur George b1888 all were born at Ditchingham. Arthur George married Elizabeth Ann Morley (born 1890 Sutton in Ashfield) they lived at 47 New Street, Huthwaite, they had the following children, Arthur b1909, Robert Williamb1911 Ethel Iris b1913 and Maisie Baker b1915. In the 1911 census Arthur George and his family were living at they lived at 49 Newcastle Street Huthwaite Nottinghamshire and were shown as Arthur George 22 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Annie 20 yrs and their children, Arthur 1 year old and Robert William 1 month old. Following his death his widow Elizabeth Ann was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 28th May 1917. His widow eventually re married to become Elizabeth Anne Wright.

Military History

Private Arthur George Baker enlisted at Mansfield, on 20th November 1914, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He went to France on 11th October 1915 and was killed in action on 1st October 1916, during the attack on the German positions at Flers/Le Sars, France during the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
