Family History

George Henry Sweet was born in 1898 at Radcliffe on Trent and was the son of Charles and Emma Sweet (née Carlisle). His father Charles was born in 1858 at Spaxton, Somerset, and his mother Emma Carlisle was born in 1869 at Aslockton. They were married in 1894 (Bingham Registration District) and they went on to have five children one of whom sadly died in infancy. Their surviving children were George Henry b1898, Lillian b1896 Radcliffe on Trent, Gerty Winifred b1904 Radcliffe on Trent and Alice Mary b1910 Tollerton. In the 1911 census the family was living at Tollerton Hall Stables, Tollerton, and shown as Charles 53 yrs a domestic coachman, Emma 42 yrs and their children, George Henry 13 yrs a gardeners' helper, Lillian 15 yrs a telegraph messenger, Gerty Winifred 7 yrs and Alice Mary 6 months.

Military History

Gunner George Henry Sweet, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 371st Battery Royal Field Artillery. George was wounded on 3rd August 1916 near Englebelnes during the Battle of the Somme. He was medically evacuated to England and treated at Netley Hospital where he died of his wounds on 4th October 1916. He was buried in Tollerton (St. Peter) Churchyard.
