He was the son of Harry and Gwenneth Whitworth of Nottingham.

Military History

Whitworth was an air gunner aboard 103 Sqdn Lancaster I LL941 which took off from Elsham Woods to bomb Stuttgart 21.24 on 24th July 1944. It crashed between Jouy-le- Potier (Loriet) where Sgt Baynes is buried in the communal cemetery and la Ferte-St-Aubin where F/S Longland is buried two villages 17 km SSW and 20 km SSE from the centre of Orleans where the others who were killed are buried in the town's main cemetery. Those lost were Joseph Sheen (P), Charles James Baynes (FE), Herbert Edwin Cowley (W/Op), Charles Alfred Longland (AB), John William Smith (AG) and Edwin Stewart (N).
