Military History

Suffolk was the Air Bomber aboard a 51 Sqdn Halifax BIII NR241 which took off to bomb Muster at 12.36 on 16th November 1944 from Snaith. On return preparing to land, it collided with a 578 Sqdn Halifax (MZ559) both machines crashing 1743 at Camblesforth some 4 miles SSE of Selby Yorkshire. 14 airmen perished. Suffolk’s crewmates were John William Bruce (Pilot), Jack Bowell (FE), Cyril Collas (N), Peter Desmond Hockley (W/Op), John Charles Wilfred Smith (AG) and Thomas Leslie Summer (AG). Lost aboard MZ559 were PT Evans (Pilot), PW Rattray (N), C Savery (AB), WH Bush (W/Op), JC Cordery (FE), KR Armstrong (AG) and JH Chester (AG). 479 aircraft – 367 Halifaxes, 94 Lancasters and 18 Mosquitoes of 4, 6 and 8 Groups took part in this operation. 138 civilians were killed, 68 of them when a concrete shelter received a direct hit.
