He was the son of Edward Hollis Bingley (1864-1921) and Ellen (née Attenborough) Bingley. Married in 1889, they had five children, three surviving infancy - Edward (b.1891), Ada (b.1894) and Charles (b.1895). In 1901, they lived on Exchange Road, West Bridgford. By 1911, they had moved to 70, Leslie Road, Forest Fields, Nottingham but Edward jnr had left home. Edward snr was a warehouseman, Ada a blouse hand and Charles a chemist. It is assumed Edward's name was listed on the St Augustine memorial because his family worshipped at the church, a short walk from their home. Shortly after discaharge from the army in 1919, Edward jnr married Emma Jones in Lincolnshire and they lived at 5, Nelson's Cottages, Scunthorpe. Their son, also Edward H, was born a year later (A/M/J/1920), around three months after his father's death. On 27/8/1920, Emma's application for a pension was rejected ('married after discharge').
Edward Hollis Bingley enlisted 11/12/1915 and formerly served (37895) with the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was awarded a Silver War Badge (B199228) and discharged with neurasthenia 7/5/1919. His death, from influenza and pneumonia, was registered at Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire.
