Albert Victor Hewitt was born in 1898 at South Normanton and was the son of the late Ernest a colliery pump man and Ethel Elizabeth Hewitt née Evans of Alfreton Road Sutton in Ashfield Ernest was born in 1877 at Bramcote, Nottingham he died on 29th November 1918, aged 41yrs, Ethel Elizabeth was born in 1878 at Huthwaite, married on 29th August 1896 at South Normanton they had 5 children. In 1911 Albert and his father Ernest are living at Lourel Villas, Fulwood, Street, Sutton in Ashfield Ernest is 34 yrs and a colliery pump man, Albert Victor is 13 yrs and a butchers assistant. In 1911 his mother Ethel Elizabeth is living at South Normanton, she is 33 yrs and a house keeper to the head of the house James Watson 50 yrs a colliery winding engineer. Following Alberts death his next of kin is shown as Harriett Kathleen Hewitt (his aunt) of 20 Charnwood Street, Sutton in Ashfield.
Lance Corporal Albert Victor Hewitt enlisted on 1st September 1914 at Mansfield, giving his age as 19 yrs and 61 days, his occupation is that of a butcher. he embarked on 29th July 1915 and was promoted to Lance Corporal in the field a short time later. He was wounded (gun shot wound to left hand) on 16th July 1916 and returned to England. He later embarked at Folkstone on 21st December 1916 and was posted to the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment on 9th January 1917. He was killed in action on 22nd March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
