Family History

Alfred Betts was born in 1890 he was the son of Alfred Charles a coal miner hewer and Kate Betts née Minchin and the brother of Jesse, Lily, Arthur, George, Daisy, Fred, Charles and Harry Betts. Alfred Charles was born in 1867 at Knotting, Bedfordshire, Kate Minchin was born in 1868 at Tubney, Berkshire they were married on 5th March 1888 at St Wilfrids, Kirkby in Ashfield, they had 14 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Stone Row, Skegby Forest near Mansfield Alfred Charles 44 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Kate 43 yrs and 9 of their children including Alfred 21 yrs a colliery labourer.

Military History

Private Alfred Betts enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 17th battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers he was killed in action on 12th July 1916 he was buried in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, France, Grave Reference: VI D 5
