Family History

John was a former regular soldier who was born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, in about 1875. In 1911 John (36), a coal miner hewer, was living at 54 Newcastle Street, Mansfield Woodhouse, a boarder in the household of a widow, Mary Breeze (42-sic). There was another boarder in the household, John Cunningham (43 b. County Kerry), a coal miner hewer. A visitor was also registered in the house on the night of the census, Maude Lucas (4 b. Nottingham), possibly Eleanor Maud Lucas (1907 J/A/S Nottingham, Matheson). John married Mary Breeze (b. 13 May 1865) at Mansfield in 1914 (O/N/D). At the time of John's death in October 1915 she was living at 6 Poplar Court, Mansfield. Mary received a weekly pension of 15/- with effect from 1/5/1916, (Pension Ledger card).

Military History

'C' Company 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters John Mahoney was a time-served professional soldier. He evidently re-enlisted soon after the outbreak of hostilities into 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters, a K1 unit raised during August and September 1914. 9th Sherwood Foresters were deployed to Gallipoli in July 1915, a campaign during which they suffered 216 fatalities. 108 men from Mahoney's unit were killed on August 9th, a day on which all their officers were killed, wounded or captured. 6 men from 9th Sherwood Foresters shared Mahoney's fate on October 4th. John Mahoney has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Panels 151 to 153.

Mansfield & Sutton Reporter, 5 November 1915: ‘Private John Mahoney Killed. News has been received by his widow, Mrs Mary Machoney (sic) of 6, Poplar-court, Mansfield, of the death of her husband, Private John Mahoney, C Company, Sherwood Foresters, who was killed in action October 9th (sic) in the Dardanelles.
