William Stokes was born in 1885 at Hucknall and was the son of William a coal miner loader and Elizabeth Stokes née Gilliver of 185 Coventry Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1854 in Saltby, Leicestershire, his mother Elizabeth Gilliver was born in 1855 at Shepy Magna, Leicestershire, they were married in 1878 their marriage was registered in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhoof, their children were , Ada b1878, Henry b1880, James b1882, William b1885 all were born in Hucknall they went on to have Minnie b1887 Buwell, Mary Emma b1888 Tamworth and Kate b1888. Bulwell In the 1911 census William is living at 281 Main Street, Bulwell Nottingham, he is shown as being William Stokes 26 yrs a labourer with a glue manufacturer, he is living with Sarah Elizabeth Mee 20 yrs single and a housekeeper. His pension record card gives details of two illegitimate children dependent on the soldier, their mother having died the children are named as Samuel William Stokes Mee born May 1911 and Annie Mee born December 1912. (mother was Sarah Elizabeth Mee who died in 1914 in Nottingham aged 23 yrs)
Private William Stokes enlisted at Nottingham on 25th June 1901 , he was 18 years and 4 months and was a collier, he lived at 185 Coventry Road, Bulwell with his next of kin his father William of the same address. He was posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He saw two periods of service in India between 1901 and 1909, he returned to England on 23rd February 1909 and was eventually posted to the reserves having time served in the battalion. He was mobilised at Derby on 5th August 1914 and once more posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and was Killed in action on 12th March 1915 during the counter attack by the Germans at Neuve Chapelle, France. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. Panel 26 and 27.
