John Thomas Walker was born in 1884 the youngest son of James an agricultural drainage worker, and Elizabeth Walker (née Cougill) of The Cottage, Wellow Green, Wellow. James was born in 1849 at Manchester, his mother (1852-1918) at Wellow. Married in 1870, they had twelve children, ten surviving infancy including Arthur b.1876, Hannah b.1878, Ellen b.1881, James b.1883, John Thomas b.1885, Henry b.1886, Louis Mary b.1890, and Alfred b.1892. In 1911, they lived at Ompton, Newark. James worked on the Rufford Estate and Alfred was a bricklayer’s labourer on the Thoresby Estate. John Thomas had left the family home by the 1911 Census and was boarding at 32, Kilton Road, Worksop with Charles Thorpe a 41 year old wood sawyer and family. John married Caroline Redding in 1905 and they had three children, two surviving infancy. It is possible John and Caroline separated because pension records cite his father as his dependant.

John Thomas Walker's older brother Arthur was killed in action 12/10/1917 serving with the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). John Thomas's birth was registered A/M/J/1884 so he may have been 33 when killed
