He was the son of John and Agnes (née Poyton) Straw and the brother of Agnes Eliza (b.1878), Stella Annie (b.1883), Charles Parr (b.1888) and Dorothy Helen (b.1893) Straw. Gilbert’s parents were born at Nottingham, John in 1854, Agnes in 1858. In 1901 and 1911, the family lived at 21, Rookwood Road, St Ann's, Nottingham. In 1911, John was a merchant’s clerk, Stella a clerk, and Charles a general dealer’s clerk. John and Agnes later lived at 28, Ena Avenue, Sneinton, Nottingham.
41st Sanitary Sec. Royal Army Medical Corps He enlisted on 28th April 1915 at Nottingham aged 19, giving his address as 21, Rookwood Road. He was posted to the Royal Army Medical Corps which he joined at Sheffield. He embarked from Devonport on 11th February 1917, disembarking at Basra, Mesopotamia on 17th May 1917. On 29th July 1918 he was posted to the 23rd British Stationary Hospital at Baghdad. He was admitted to hospital on 10th November 1918 suffering from malaria. He died at Kangavar on 14th November 1918 of fever (N.Y.D. fever) probably malaria. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tehran Memorial, Iran (panel 5 column 2).
