Philip Monsheimer was born in 1884 the son of John Monsheimer, an embroiderer, and Mary Ann Adcock. Philip’s father was born in 1846 in Germany and died at Nottingham aged 47 in 1892. Mary Ann Adcock was born in 1849 at Chilwell. Married in 1869 at Nottingham, they had nine children, six surviving infancy - John b.1876, William b.1879, Mary b.1882, Philip b.1884, Herbert b.1886 and Fanny b.1888. In 1901 and 1911 Mary Ann lived at 19, Marcus Street, Lenton, Nottingham. Phillip married Emma West (b.1886 Radford) in 1906 in Nottingham and they had a daughter Hilda born 1909 at Radford. In 1911, they lived at 217, Denman Street, Radford.
5th Labour Company Philip Monsheimer (served as Philip West) attested at Nottingham on 7th December 1915 (his ASR notes he was of alien origin). Posted to the reserves, he was mobilsed on 10th June 1916 and posted to 11th Bn North Staffordshire Regiment. He was transferred to the 30th Bn Middlesex Regiment on 21st March 1918 and thence to the battalion's Labour Corps (a unit established for enemy aliens). He landed in France on 19th April 1918 and was admitted to hospital at Rouen (reason not stated) on 23rd February 1919, returning to England on 2nd March. He returned to the Western Front on 26th June 1919 and posted as Class Z Reserve on 19th October 1919. He was demobilised to 217, Denmen Street, Radford having served for 3 years and 302 days. Between his attestation and death, Monsheimer changed his name to West (his wife's maiden name). He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery under a CWGC headstone bearing the name West.
Nottingham General Cemetery, Grave Reference: 04118 His brother Herbert Monsheimer served under the name William Adcock and died of wounds on 23rd October 1914. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery
