Herbert Rudd was born in 1878 the son of Samuel and Mary Ann Rudd (née Walker). Samuel was born in 1854 and died in 1889 at Nottingham. Mary Ann Walker was born in 1860 at Cropwell Bishop. They had the following children - Herbert b.1878, Ada b.1884, Lizzie b.1886, Emily b.1888, and Samuel b.1890. Mary Ann re-married in 1893 at Nottingham to James Floyd (born 1862 at Nottingham). They had two children - Frank Floyd b.1895 and Florence Floyd b.1899. In 1911, the family lived at 159, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham. James Floyd was a twist hand, Frank Lloyd a finance agent and Emily Rudd a milliner. Herbert Rudd had left home by 1911 and was lodging with four other men at 61, Red Lion Street, Broad Marsh, Nottingham
Herbert Rudd enlisted at Newark on 15 March 1915 aged 34. He was posted to the Leicestershire Regiment. However by 27th March 1915 he had been discharged from the army as unlikely to become an efficient soldier. He later re-enlisted or was conscripted and initially served (56975) in the Lincolnshire Regiment, later transferring to Yorkshire Regiment.
