He was the son of Robert and Sarah Ann Shelton and the brother of Lucy, Mary, Ada, William, Robert, Ellen, James and Lizzie Shelton. In 1901, they lived on Bunting's Lane, Carlton. In 1911, he lived in Smith's Yard, Main Street, Carlton Nottingham with Mary Wilson, his housekeeper, and her two sons William Herbert and Robert Ernest Wilson.
