Family History

John Swinscoe (junior) was born in 1871 at Carlton and was the son of John Swinscoe (senior) b1828 and Harriett Swinscoe née Griffin b1833. They were married in 1852, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district John Swinscoe (junior) married his wife Nora Ellen Hoy (b1882 Carlton) on 7th October 1906 at St Paul's Church, Carlton, they lived at 50 Southcliffe Road, Carlton. They went on to have the following children, John Stanley born 13th October 1907 who died on 29th April 1915, Gladys May born 3rd January 1911, Doris Beatrice born 19th February 1914 and Margaret Ellen born 29th October 1916. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Mount Pleasant, Carlton and are shown as John 40 yrs a labourer, he is living with his wife Nora Ellen 29 yrs a cheveroner in the hosiery trade and their children John Stanley 3 yrs and Gladys May 3 months of age. A the time of his death the family were living at 50 Southcliffe Road, Carlton, Nottingham.

Military History

Private John Swinscoe enlisted into the Special Reserves on 9th September 1914. He stated he had previously served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters for 12 yrs and was discharged on 2nd May 1906. He was 43 yrs and 215 days old, he was a general labourer. He was posted to the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters but discharged on 27th July 1916 suffering with Pulmonary Tuberculosis. He did not serve abroad and had served for 1 year and 323 days. His discharge address was 50 Southcliffe Road, Carlton, Nottingham. He died on 11th September 1916.
