Christopher Leonard (also known as Leonard) was the son of Alice Freeman and the husband of Sarah Jane Freeman (née Wootton). Christopher Leonard was born in Lower Arncott near Bicester, Oxfordshire, in 1877, the son of Alice Freeman. Alice (bap. Ambrosden 1 February 1852) was the daughter of William and Sarah Freeman and in 1881 she and Christopher (3) were living at Lower Arncott with her widowed father, an agricultural labourer. Christopher has not yet been traced on the 1891 Census. Alice (39, spinster) married James Askins (39), a widower, on 1 May 1889 at Ambrosden St Mary'; both signed the register with their mark. She died in 1908 (buried 4 February Ambrosden). Christopher's wife, Sarah Jane Wootton, was born in East Leake on 17 December 1876 (1877 J/F/M Louborough Leics). In 1891 Sarah was living with her widowed mother Eliza Wootton on Main Street, East Leake; both were working as seamers of hosiery. Also in the household were her brother Henry Marshall (26) a basket maker, and sister Ellen (10). Christopher and Sarah Jane were married in 1898 and had four children: Christopher Leonard (aka Leonard) b. East Leake 1900 bap. East Leake St Mary 23 September 1900; James William b. East Leake 1903, Daisy b. 1905 and Alice b. Gotham birth registered 1909 (J/F/M). 1n 1901 Leonard (sic), a stone quarry worker, and Sarah lived at Gunn's Yard, East Street, East Leake, Nottinghamshire, with their son Christopher (1). They had moved to Monks Lane, Gotham, by 1911 where they were living with their four children, Leonard (sic), James (7), Daisy (5) and Alice (2). Leonard snr. was working as an engine driver. The CWGC record gave Sarah Jane's address as Town Street, Gotham, but by 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled she was living at 9 Meadow End, Gotham. Sarah was still living at the same address when she died on 30 September 1942.
7th Bn The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Formerly 83031 Sherwood Foresters Christopher Leonard was killed in action on 21 March 1918 (death presumed on that date). He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial (Panels 58 & 59). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
