Family History

John Millington Meakin was the son of John and Mary (née Attenborough) Meakin. John snr and Mary were both born at Nottingham in 1831. Married in 1849, they had the following children - William Henry b.1850, Eliza Ann b.1855, John Millington b.1859, Samuel Edward b.1861 and Henry Charles b.1867. All were born in Basford, Nottingham. Mary Meakin died in 1890 aged 59. John Millington Meakin married Fanny Shelton (b.1858 Blidworth) in 1879 at Nottingham. In 1911, they lived at 72, Park Lane, Old Basford. Six of the couple’s seven children had died by 1911. Their surviving son, eighteen year old William, was a shop assistant. At the time of John Meakin’s death, the family was living at 25, Ingram Terrace, Old Basford, Nottingham.

Military History

John Millington Meakin, a former Robin Hood Rifleman, enlisted in Nottingham on 1st December 1914 and was posted to his old unit, 7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (probably to the Supernumerary Company given his age). He transferred to the Royal Defence Corps on 29th April 1916, subsequently serving at the Brocton Prisoner of War camp. He was discharged as no longer physically fit for service on 13th August 1917, having seen no service overseas. He was issued Silver War Badge no. 124528.
