George was the son of George Ellis and his wife Eliza Ann (Eliza Ann Nix Sturton). His father George snr. was born in about 1857 in Arnold, and his mother Eliza Ann was born in about 1861, also in Arnold. George and Eliza Ann were married on 26 April 1861 at Arnold St Mary (Eliza Ann N Sturton/George Ellis 1881 A/M/J Basford). They had 13 children, however six of the children died in infancy or early childhood. Thirteen children have been identified from the census records between 1891 and 1911 and registrations of births and baptismal records (Arnold St Mary), birth registrations giving the mother's maiden name as either Nix or Sturton and baptismal records giving the parents' names and address (Front Street): George Arthur birth registered 1883 (J/F/M Basford) death registered 1883 (J/F/M Basford), Mary Ann birth registered 1884 (J/F/M Basford) bap. 4 January 1884, Eliza b. 1885 (O/N/D Basford) bap. 5 December 1885 d. 1885 (O/N/D Basford), Ethel b. 1887 (O/N/D Basford) death registered 1888 (J/F/M Basford) - but see Ellen bap. 1887, Ellen bap. 19 October 1887 (possibly Ethel b. 1887 d. 1888), Annie Malinda b. 1888 (O/N/D Basford) bap. 9 December 1888, George b. 1890 (A/M/J Basford) bap. 13 August 1890, James Hilton birth registered 1892 (J/F/M Basford), John b. 1893 (A/M/J Basford) d. 1893 (A/M/J Basford), Ellen b. 1894 (A/M/J Basford), Sarah Ann b. 1886 (J/A/S Basford) d. 1886 (J/A/S Basford), Wright b. 10 September 1896 (O/N/D Basford) and Winifred Eliza b. 1900 (O/N/D Basford). In 1891 George (35), a butcher, and his wife Eliza were living on Wood Street, Arnold, with their three children Mary Ann (7), Annie Malinda (2) and George (under 1 yr). By 1901 George (44), a butcher shopkeeper, and Eliza were living on Front Street, Arnold. Their seven surviving children were in the home on the night of the census: Mary (17) a butcher's assistant, Annie (12), George (10), James (9), Ellen (6), Wright (4) and Winifred (under 1 yr), In the 1911 Census George jnr. is shown living with his family at 159 Front Street, Arnold. They are shown as George head of the household 54 yrs, his wife Eliza Ann 50 yrs and their children Annie Malinda 22 yrs a costumier, George 20 yrs an assistant in his father's butchery business, James Hilton 19 yrs also assisting in his father's business, Ellen 16 yrs a hosiery cutter, Wright 14 yrs a clerk, and Winifred Eliza 10 yrs. His mother, Eliza, probably died in 1913 (J/F/M Basford) aged 53. George was engaged to Emma at the time of his death in 1918.
Driver George Ellis, served with “D” Battery, 310th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. He died of pneumonia at 50th Casualty Clearing Station on 12th December 1918 and was buried in Premont British Cemetery grave reference IV.A.8
Two of his brothers also served during the Great War: James Hilton Ellis enlisted in 10th December 1915 when he was 24 yrs and 1 month old and was placed in the Reserves until he was called up on 1st December 1916. He served in the South Staffordshire Regiment then the Army Service Corps and finally in the Labour Corps. He was discharged in 1919. In 1939 James, a master butcher, was living at 23 Church Drive, Arnold, with his wife Annie (b. 2 July 1893) and son George (b. 24 February 1925) a butcher's errand boy. He died in 1974 (O/N/D Nottingham). Wright Ellis enlisted on 3rd March 1916 when he was 20 yrs and months old. He was placed into the reserves and called up on 28th June 1917 and served with the Royal Army Medical Corps (123354) and served overseas. He was discharged to Class 'Z' Army Reserve on demobilization on 9 January 1920. Wright was married in Brussels - Consular/Overseas Marriages (1926-1930) Elizabeth W Lowe to Wright Ellis - and in 1939 he was a master butcher and living at 173 Front Street, Arnold, with his wife Winifred Elizabeth(b. 8 April 1910) a butcher's assistant, and their daughter Nancy E. (b. 21 April 1933). Wright died in 1977 (J/F/M Nottingham). Notice of George's death published 23rd December 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ELLIS. – On December 15th (sic), at 50 Casualty Clearing Station, France, of pneumonia, Driver George Ellis, aged 29 years. – Silently mourned by by father, sisters, & brothers.” Notice of his death published 20th December 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ELLIS. – On Dec. 15th (sic), at 50 Casualty Clearing Station, France, of pneumonia, Driver George Ellis, R.F.A., eldest son of George Ellis, 159 Front-street, Arnold.
