Frank Reed was born in 1896 he was the son of John a coal miner and Sarah Jane Reed née Mays and the brother of John, Harry, Thomas and William Reed. John was born in 1870 at Stilton, Huntingdonshire, Sarah Jane Mays was born in 1869 also at Stilton, they were married on 21st February 1891 at Riddings, Derbyshire, they had 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911, the family lived on Station Road, Selston, Nottinghamshire John 41 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Sarah 42 yrs and their 5 children including Frank 15 yrs a coal miner ganger John Reed later moved to 7, King's Terrace, King's Road, Askern, Doncaster.
Frank Reed enlisted at Mansfield and was posted to 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Sherwood Foresters and joined them at Bethune France on 24 September 1915. At some point he was sent to 9th Battalion and was killed in action during the Battle of Broodseinde when an attack was made on the village of Poelcappelle. The battalion took all of its objectives. One Victoria Cross, five Distinguished Conduct medals and five Military Medals were awarded, but at a high cost with over 100 men killed or dying of wounds. Frank was one of 57 men killed in the action who have no known grave and their names are recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
