William Dexter Clowes was born in 1894 the son of Arthur John a coal miner hewer and Fanny Elizabeth Clowes née Matthews of 46 Sherwood Road, Kirby Road, Sutton in Ashfield, Notts. Arthur John was born in 1857 at Birmingham, Fanny Elizabeth Matthews was born in 1867 at Holbeck, Lincolnshire, married on 10th November 1886 at All Saints Church , Wigston Magna, Leicestershire, they went on to have 10 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 45 Sherwood Road, Sutton in Ashfield.
Private William Clowes enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment at Gallipoli, in Egypt, France and Belgium. He won the Military Medal in 1917 - Clowes, William Dexter: Private 20045 : 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, London Gazette 28/1/1918,. For conspicuous gallantry on 4th October 1917, when in the attack on German lines (Pheasant Farm) near Poelcappelle Belgium. He was killed in action on 4th November 1918 and is buried at Sebourg British Cemetery, France. Cemetery.
