Francis Edward Scott Clarke was born in 1885 at Sutton in Ashfield. He married Sarah Ann Butler (born 15th February 1885) in 1903 at Mansfield, Sarah brought a child to the marriage, Mary Lizzie Clarke born 10th October 1903, they had four further children, Rebecca born 7th February 1907, Nathan born 19th July 1909 , Frank Edward born 13th September 1911 and Samuel born 30th March 1914, the family lived at 23 Mill Street, Sutton in Ashfield. In 1911 the family lived at 23 Mill Street Sutton in Ashfield Francis 28 yrs is a coal miner hewer, living with his wife Sarah Ann 26 yrs and their children, Mary Elizabeth 7 yrs, Rebecca 4 yrs and Nathan 1 year of age. Commencing 18th November 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 37 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military History

Private Francis Edward Scott Clarke enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, he landed in France on 17th February 1915 He died in the Bellinge Military Hospital , Orrel, near Wigan of wounds received at the Paschendaele Ridge in the 3rd Battle of Ypres and is buried in Sutton in Ashfield Cemetery.
