Felvus Frederick Birks was baptised on 3rd October 1886 at Alfreton the son of the late Frederick William a railway guard and Alice Birks née Jackson . Frederick William was born in 1854 at Ashton, Shropshire, he died in 1901 aged 48 yrs, Alice Jackson was born in 1864 at Ashby De La Zouch, married on 26th February 1883 at Christ Church, Burton upon Trent they had 7 children. Felvus married Annie Elizabeth Hill in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 10 Bishop Street, Sutton in Ashfield, they had 2 children, Frederick William born 30th May 1911 and Doris born 15th January 1914. In 1911 the family lived at 12 Jubilee Cottage, Huthwaite Road, Sutton in Ashfield, Felvus is 24 yrs old and a coal miner loader, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 19 yrs and his siblings, John 19 yrs a coal miner loader, Lily 15 yrs a coal mine cleaner, Ernest 13 yrs a scholar and Beatrice 11 yrs a scholar. Commencing 12th June 1916 his widow Annie was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence. On 6th August 1917 his widow re married Private James Oakley of the King's Own Yorkshire Light infantry they lived at 2. Carlton Terrace, Carlton, Barnsley.
Private Felvus Frederick Birks enlisted at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, he went to France 17th August 1915 and died of wounds 4th December 1915. Buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, France. Plot 3. Row G. Grave 22.
