Ernest Elwick was born in 1897 in West Bridgford and was the son of John Thomas a warehouseman in the leather trade and Elizabeth Elwick née Turney of 18,North Road,West Bridgford,Nottingham. His father John Thomas was born in 1873 in Grosmont, Yorkshire and his mother Elizabeth was born in 1874 in the Nottingham, they were married in 1896, their marriage was record in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have a further child a daughter Edith born in 1899 also in West Birdgford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 21 Highfield Grove, West Bridgford and are shown as John Thomas 38 yrs a warehouseman in the leather trade, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 37 yrs and their two children Ernest 13 yrs and Edith 12 yrs both are scholars.
Private Ernest Elwick, enlisted on 15th October 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his address as 21 Highfield Grove, West Bridgford, Nottingham he gave his age as 18 yrs and 5 months . He served with the 2/2nd North Midland Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps and embarked from Folkstone on 27th February 1917 landing in Boulogne the same day. He was reported missing on 21st March 1918 and his death was later confirmed to have occur on that date. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Panel 95, He had served for a total of 3 yrs and 158 days.
Death notice published 10th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- ELWICK. – Missing March 21st, 1918, now officially presumed killed, Pte. Ernest Elwick, R.A.M.C., Sherwood Foresters, aged 20, dearly-loved and only son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Elwick, 21 Highfield-grove, West Bridgford, joined the colours October, 1914. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life to save others. – Deeply mourned by his father, mother, and sister Edith.” In memoriam published 22nd March 19120 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ELWICK. – In loving memory of our dearly loved and only son, Private Ernest Elwick, R.A.M.C., reported missing March 21st, 1918.
