He was the son of Joseph and Rebecca Barnes and the brother of Clementine, Francis Herbert, Martha, Gladys, Horace Hilton, Lawrence, Lottie, Evelyn, John Richard and Olive Maud Barnes. In 1911, they lived at 76, Vale Drive, Shirebrook, Nottinghamshire. He was the husband of Florence (née Broomby) Barnes. They lived on Recreation Drive, Shirebrook. Florence married Albert E Dawson at Mansfield in 1917.
