Family History

William McLeod was born on 2nd November 1885 at Newark and was the son of the late Robert John McLeod a joiner and Sarah Ann McLeod née Simpson 14 Guildhall Street, Newark. His father Robert John was born in 1851 at Edinburgh, his mother Sarah Ann Simpson was born in 1848 at Newark. They were married on 19th November 1871 at Chesterfield and went on to have the following children, Sarah Ellen b1872 Idle, Yorkshire, Robert b1874 Idle, James b1875 Idle, David b1876 Idle, Janet b1877 Leeds, Lizzie b1879 Newark, Mary Ann b1881 Newark, Sophia b1883 Newark, William b1885 Newark and Minnie b1888 Newark. In the 1911 census his mother Sarah Ann is shown as being head of the family 66 yrs a widow and charwoman, she is living at 1 Tallent Row, Pelham Street, Newark, she is living alone , she states she was married for 39 yrs and had had 10 children, 3 of whom had died.

Military History

Private William Mcleod enlisted on the 23rd February 1906 at Newark, he served with the 20th Hussars and saw service in India. Returning to England in 1913 as a reservist he was recalled at the outbreak of war. He died of wounds on 17th September 1914 and is buried at La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.
