He was the son of William and Mary Bullock of Alfreton, Derbyshire. He was the husband of Ann Ellen Bullock (née Hooley) and the father of Edna Eileen, Elizabeth Ellen, Phyliss May and Annie K Bullock. They lived at 96 Welbeck Street, Creswell.
He enlisted 2/9/1914 aged 32 years 30 days and was assigned to 'D' Coy 12th Bn Sherwood Foresters. On 26/2/1915, he was discharged as medically unfit. However, by July 2015 he had re-enlisted into the Lancashire Fusiliers. He died of wounds.
Bullock's great granddaughter Deborah Clay notes 'The tragedy is that on 25th March 1916 my great grandmother Ann gave birth to their fifth daughter, Maggie and we've always wondered if she could have received a telegram telling her Samuel had been injured. Could this have caused her to go into labour? Regardless he would never know her and they already had four other girls aged 4, 6 8 & 9.' Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery Armentieres, Grave Reference: IX G 87 Thanks to Deborah Clay for this identification.
