George Smith was born in 1882 at Nottingham and was the son of George and Sarah Smith and the brother of Rose, Samuel, John, James and Florence Smith. In 1891 and 1901, they lived at 26, Pelican Street, Denman Street, Radford, Nottingham. George married his wife Elizabeth Clarke b1880 in 1909 at Nottingham, and was the father of Irene born 1910, Harold b1914 and Harry George b1916, they lived at 39 Hutton Street, Colwick Road, Sneinton, Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 36, Queen's Grove, Queen's Bridge Road, Nottingham and were shown as George Smith 29 yrs a railway carriage cleaner, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 30 yrs and their daughter Irene 3 months of age, also living with them is Frank Clarke 34 yrs a railway carriage cleaner and described as a brother in law. Following George's death his widow Elizabeth was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 22nd October 1917.
Private George Smith enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Sneinton, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 4th March 1917 and is buried at Aveluy Wood Cemetery (Lancashire Dump) Mesnil-Martinsart, France.
