He was the son of William and Elizabeth Walker. His father, a grain miller, was born in 1856 at Lowdham, his mother in 1860 at North Scarle, Lincolnshire. He was the brother of George William, born in 1880 at Newark and working as a corn miller, Ellen born in 1882 and working as an embroidery machinist , Edward, born in 1886, Alfred, born in 1887, Harold, born in 1890, Frances W. born in 1892 and Wilfred, born in 1900. All the children were born in Long Bennington, apart from Wilfred, who was born in Nottingham. 1n 1901,the family lived at 149 Norton Street, Radford, Nottingham before moving to 42, Manvers Avenue, Sneinton Hill, Nottingham. In 1911 Walter Walker was boarding at Sneinton Street, Nottingham.
Walker joined the 2/1st Lancashire Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, and following training he was drafted to France. In 1917 the battery was involved in fighting in the Ypres Salient and Walker was wounded and taken to a nearby field ambulance where he died the same day.
