He was the son of George and Florence Ann Tradewell (died 1898 aged 38) and the brother of Charles, Eveline, Frederick, Agnes, George, Florence, William, HIlda and Edna Tradewell. In 1891 and 1901, the family lived in Tradewell's Yard, Hill Top, Bolsover. In 1911, Frank was boarding at 61, Rosehill Cottages, Prospect Street, Radford Nottingham.
