Born in in 1892, George Simpson was the son of Joseph and Ellen (Nellie) Simpson. In 1911 they lived at 306 Denman Street, Nottingham. He was one of nine children including Lillian, Gracie, Bettie, Florrie, Edwin, Willie, Claudie and Harry. George Simpson married Mabel Ellen Saxton (sometimes known as Daisy) on 6th April 1912. Their sons George Arthur and Claude Arnold Simpson were born 1912 and 1914 they lived at 28 Schooner Street, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence which commenced on 9th April 1917.
George enlisted in the Army Service Corp on 9th November 1914 aged 22 but was discharged 6 days later under paragraph 392(11) KR - "having been irregularly enlisted". He then somehow found his way into the Machine Gun Corps.
Nottingham Evening Post – Monday 3rd October 1916: 'SIMPSON – Killed in action, September 16th 1916. Gunner George Simpson, aged 24, the dearly beloved husband of Daisy Simpson, 28, Schooner Street. Sleep on, husband dear, in a hero’s grave, one we may never see; but as long as life and memory last, we shall remember thee. – From his sorrowing wife and little sons Arthur and Claud.' 'SIMPSON – Killed in action, September 16th 1916. Gunner George Simpson, the beloved brother of Claude Simpson. His heart was true, his spirit brave, his resting place a soldier’s grave. – From his sorrowing brother Claudie.' 'SIMPSON – Killed in action, September 16th 1916. Gunner George Simpson, the beloved brother of Harry Simpson. He died a noble death. – Sorrowing brother Harry.' SIMPSON – Killed in action, September 16th 1916. Gunner George Simpson, aged 24, the dearly beloved son of Joseph and Ellen Simpson, 305 and 307, Ilkeston Road. He bravely answered duty’s call, but God had willed that he should fall; but the unknown grave is the bitterest blow, none but an aching heart can know. – From his sorrowing mother, father, brothers and sisters, Ted (in France), Willie (in Africa).'
