John Henry Rogers was born in 1887 at Nottingham and was the son of Henry a coal miner hewer and Mary Elizabeth Rogers née Tucker of Shortwood, Trowell. His father Henry was born in 1859 at Wollaton, his mother Mary Elizabeth Tucker was born in 1859 at Nottingham, they were married in 1877 at Nottingham and went on to have 9 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born at Radford and were, Beatrice b1878, Lewis b1881, John Henry b1887, Mabel b1890, Lilly b1893, Cyril b1897 and Tilly Mary Rogers b1901. In the 1911 census the family were living at Shortwood, Trowell, Nottinghamshire. and were shown as Henry 52 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary 52 yrs and their children, John Henry 23 yrs a coal miner screen labourer, Cyril 14 yrs at home and Tilly Mary 10 yrs a scholar. John married his wife Ethel May Clarke in 1917 at Nottingham, they lived at Lime Cottage, Alexandra Street, New Basford Nottingham.
Gunner John Henry Rodgers, served with 'B' Battery, 99th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, he died of pneumonia in Salonika on 6th December 1918. He is buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece. CWGC record his name as RODGERS
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 15/1/1919: 'Rogers. On December 6th, at Salonika, of pneumonia, Gnr. J H Rogers, son of H and M Rogers of Nottingham, formerly of Trowell, aged 31 years. Deeply mourned by his father, mother, brothers and sisters.' He is commemorated on a family grave in Lenton Holy Trinity churchyard
