Family History

Charles William Ward was the son of Joseph and Alice Ward and the brother of Joseph, James, Harry, Hilda and Eric Ward. In 1911 they lived at 86 Miall Street, Radford, Nottingham. Charles married his wife Alma Wilson (born 1889) in 1912 at Nottingham, they lived at 516 Berridge Road, Hyson Green, Nottingham, they went on to have 2 daughters Edna b1913 and Maisie b1918 Following his death his widow Alma was awarded a pension of 20 shilings and 5 pence a week which commenced on 2nd June 1919.

Military History

23rd Bn Charles William Ward initially served (2188) in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) later transfering to the London Regiment. He died of wounds and is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Grave Reference: XVII H 5

In memoriam published 9th December 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WARD. – Died of wounds received in action October 14th, 1918, Pte. Charles W. Ward, the beloved eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ward, 88, Miall-street, Radford. Grant him, O Lord, eternal rest. – From father, mother, sister, and brothers. “WARD. – Died of wounds received in action October 14th, 1918, Pte. Charles W. Ward, the dearly loved brother of Mr. and Mrs. J. Horne.
