George Ernest (Butler) Ward was born in 1894 at Carlton and was the son of Henry Butler Ward a stationary engine driver and Catherine Ward née Tatham of 98 Forster Street, Radford. His father Henry Butler was born in 1862 at Hulme, Manchester, his mother Catherine Tatham was born in 1869 at Nottingham. They were married on 24th December 1887 at Nottingham and went on to have three children, Henry Victor b1888, Arthur William b1891 and George Ernest b1894 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 98 Forster Street, Radford, Nottingham and are shown as Henry 49 yrs a stationary engine driver, he is living with his wife Catherine 42 yrs and their sons, Arthur 20 yrs a carriage straightener in lace factory and George 17 yrs a tobacco worker. George Ernest married Jennie Thompson in 1915 at Nottingham, they lived at 5 Althorpe Grove, Basford and later 56 Radford Boulevard, Nottingham, they had a son Frederick Ernest born 1916. Following his death his widow Jennie was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 15th April 1918.
Private George Ernest B Ward originally enlisted on 9th January 1912 at Nottingham into the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment with the service number 1500, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 9 months, he was a machine operator at Players Factory. His next of kin was his father Henry Ward of 98 Forster Street, Radford, Nottingham. He was embodied for war on 5th August 1914 , however on 11th December 1914 was discharged from the Army being medically unit. He later re joined the Army and served with the 2nd battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry where he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was killed in action on 30th September 1917 and is buried at Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium (grave ref III.K.2)
