He was the youngest son of Edward and Emma Jane Strouther. According to the 1911 census, when this information was collated for the first time, Edward and Emma had had five children born alive but only four were still living; it is probable that the four surviving children were their sons Percy G., Joseph Edward, Leonard Walter and Ernest James and that the fifth child was not alive at the time of the three census between 1891 and 1911. All the children had been born in Lenton. In 1891 Edward, a leather finisher, and Emma were living at 4 Guthrie Street, Lenton, with their sons, Percy (8), Joseph (6), Leonard (5) and Ernest (1). By 1901 the family was living at 4 Forster Street, Radford, and Edward's sister-in-law, Margaret Moseley, was also in the household. Ten years later Edward and Emma, together with their three youngest sons, Joseph, Leonard and Ernest, were living at 5 Radford Boulevard, Radford; Edward was still following the occupation of leather finisher and his sons were warehousemen for lace manufacturers. The family was still at the same address at the time of Ernest's death in 1917.
He died in the 1st London General Hospital and is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref 19660). His award of the Military Medal was gazetted on 17th April 1917.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 5 March 1917: ‘Strouther. Died of wounds March 3rd in hospital, Private Ernest James Strouther, age 27, youngest son of Mr and Mrs E Strouther, 5 Radford Boulevard. Internment General Cemetery.’ Further obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 2nd March 1918 :- “STROUTHER. – In ever-loving memory of Ernest James Strouther, M.M., died of wounds March 3rd, 1917. – Father, mother, brothers, and sisters. “STROUTHER. – In affectionate remembrance of Ernest James Strouther, M.M., died of wounds March 3rd, 1917. Safe home. – Louise. “STROUTHER. – In loving memory of our dear friend, Ernest, died of wounds March 3rd, 1917.
