He was the son of Tom and Mary Sharpe and the brother of Frederick, John, William, Robert and Jane Sharpe who lived in Buxton. In 1891, George Sharpe lived in a Leicester workhouse which probably accounts for his decision to serve with the Leicestershire Regiment. In 1911, he was boarding with Arthur and Annie Whitlock and their daughter Elizabeth at 43, Redoubt Street, Radford, Nottingham. George and Elizabeth were married in 1912 and they lived next door to her parents at 45, Redoubt Street. She was cited as George's widow by the army but his parents became joint legatees. Possibly George and Elizabeth had separated because he was a resident of Buxton (presumably with his family) prior to his Great War service.
George Sharpe enlisted in the Leicestershire Regiment 24/7/1901 and completed eight years service. He stood 5' 8" tall and weighed 119 lbs and was described as 'a likely recruit' by the Approving Officer. A recalled reservist, he arrived in France 29/11/1914. He died from Phithisis (pulmonary tuberculosis) at Ormskirk Cottage Hospita, near Liverpool.
