Jack Newton was born in 1887 at Radford and was the son of William a general labourer and Elizabeth Newton née Cooke of 64 Fisher Street, New Basford, Nottingham. His father William was born in 1851 at Leeds and his mother Elizabeth Cooke was born in 1853 at Mansfield Woodhouse, they were married in 1871 at Mansfield and went on to have 8 children, 4 of whom sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Robert b1876, Frances b1880, Annie b1884 and Jack b1887. In the 1911 census the family was living at 64 Fisher Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham and were shown as William 60 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 58 yrs and their son Jack 24 yrs a grave digger. Jack married Florence Woodhouse in 1912 at Nottingham, they lived at 5 Connaught Street Radford Nottingham. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 4th March 1918.
Private Jack Newton enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 'D' Coy 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 25th August 1917 and is buried at Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France. Plot 6. Row C. Grave 30.
Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 3/9/1917: 'Newton. Died of wounds August 25th 1917. Pte Jack Newton Sherwood Foresters of 7 Connaught Street Radford. He will never be forgotten never will his memory fade loving thoughts will always wander to the place where he is alid. Mother father, sisters, brother, nieces and nephews.' In memoriam published 26th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NEWTON. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. Jack Newton, who died of wounds August 25th, 1917. One of the best. – Sadly missed by his loving wife Florrie, mother, and Hetty. “NEWTON. – In loving memory of Pte. J. Newton, who died of wounds August 25th, 1917. Fondly remembered. – Mother, father, sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews. “NEWTON. – In loving memory of our dear friend, Pte.
