He was the son of Henry and Annie McAvan, of 102 Rothesay Avenue, Nottingham. He was the husband of Mabel (née Eite) McAvan and the father of Kathleen McAvan. In 1911 they lived at 61 Truman Street Alfred Street Central St Ann's Nottingham.
Corporal Bernard Henry McAvan, enlisted in Nottingham and served with 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in France on 3rd May 1915 and was killed in action on 1st July 1917. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
In memoriam published 1st July 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “McAVAN. – In loving memory of Corporal B. H. McAvan, reported killed July 1st, 1917, or since that date.
