Family history

Harry Long was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the son of Matthew Henry a coal dealer and Kate Long née Bryan of 17 Guthrie Street Radford Nottingham.

His father Matthew Henry was born in 1863 at Nottingham, his mother Kate Bryan was born in 1866 at Notingham, they were married on 24th December 1888 at St Augustines Church, New Basford, they went on to have 3 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 5 Butler Street, Radford, Nottingham, Matthew Henry 48 yrs is a coal dealer he is living with his wife Kate 45 yrs and their children, Nellie Marian 21 yrs a pattern girl in the lace trade, Harry 14 yrs a scholar and Florence Elizabeth 5 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Harry Long enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Highland Light Infantry he was killed in action on 23rd August 1918 and is buried at Gomiecourt South Cemetery, Grave Reference: II A 4

Family headstone Holy Trinity churchyard, Lenton: (Kate and Matthew Henry Long). Also of their beloved son, Harry Long, killed in action in France, August 23rd 1918, aged 23 years. ‘May the reward be greater than the sacrifice.’
