Louis King was born in 1891 the son of George Fred King (died 1900 aged 32) a mechanic and Sarah Annie King (née Hardwick). His father was born in 1868 in Radford, his mother also born in 1868 in Tibshelf, Derbyshire. They married in 1890 and had two more children, both born at Nottingham, Wilfrid b.1893 and Evelyn b.1896. The family resided at 105 Birkin Avenue Nottingham. In 1891 they lived at 1 Tyler’s Buildings Garfield Road Radford. In 1901 the family lived at 78 Norwood Road Radford. Louis married Ethel May Louisa Lewin at Nottingham in 1912. They had a daughter Doris Marjorie King and lived at 18 Exchange Road West Bridgford Nottingham. Ethel, living at 19 Warwick Street Lenton, was awarded a weekly pension of 18/9d from 31/12/1917.
Louis King attested on 9th December 1915 at West Bridgford and posted to the reserves the following day. He was mobilised on 24th July 1916 and posted with service number 56581 to the 18th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He embarked for France on 20th December 1916, disembarking in France the following day. He was transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment (1st Battalion and on 8th January 1917 to the 9th). His brother Wilfrid served in the Royal Navy during the war enlisting for service on 4th June 1913 for a term of 12 years. He served on HMS Princess Royal and survived the war eventually leaving the Royal Navy on 4th June 1925. In Memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 13th March 1918 :- “KING. – Private Louis King, West Bridgford, missing May 3rd, now reported killed. – Sorrowing mother, Wilfred, and Evylyn. “KING. – Reported missing May 3rd, now presumed killed, Pte. Louis King, Leicesters, of 81 Portland-road, West Bridgford, a loving and devoted husband. – Sadly missed by wife Louie and daughter Doris. “KING. – Reported missing May 3rd, now presume killed, our dear son-in-law, Louis (Private). A noble life laid down. – Mr. and Mrs. Lewin and Maggie. “KING. – Missing May 3rd, 1917, presumed killed, Pte. Louis King. Deeply mourned. – Ada, Percy (Italy), and Winnie. “KING. – Missing May 3rd, now presume killed, Pte. Louis King.
