He was the son of William Henry and Mary Ann (née Witham) Woodward. His father was born in 1862 in Tewkesbury Gloucestershire and his mother in 1863 at Mansfield. They were married in 1881 in Nottingham and had twelve children three of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children, all born in Nottingham, were:- William Henry b.1886, Arthur b.1889, Alice b.1891, Tom b.1893 (killed in action 14/2/1916), Samuel b.1895, Charles, b.1897, Ernest b.1899, Richard b.1903 and Alice b.1910. In 1901 the family lived at 64 Moorgate Street New Radford and in 1911 at 11 Redboubt Street Radford (both Nottingham).
Able seaman Charles Woodward enlisted on 24th August 1915 and was drafted to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and landed at Stavros in Greece on 25th February 1916 where he served until 13th November 1916 when he was wounded by being bayoneted in the left leg and invalided back to England. After he had recovered from his leg wound he was drafted to the British Expeditionary Force in France on 6th May 1917. He joined the Anson Battalion on 3rd June 1917 and served with them until he was killed in action on 13th January 1918. He is buried at Fifteen Ravine British Cemetery Villiers Plouich Grave Reference I D 2
His brother Private Thomas Woodward enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire ) Regiment. He landed in France on 28th July 1915, he was killed in action on 14th February 1916. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
