Harry was born in 1893 in Radford and was the son of William a colliery stoker and Sarah Swift née Sheen they lived at 1 Charter Street Radford Nottingham. His father William was born in 1857 in Crewe Cheshire and his mother Sarah was born in 1872 in Shardlow Derbyshire, they were married in 1890, their marriage was recorded in the Leicestershire Registration district. They had seven children , however sadly 1 died in infancy, their children were : - William born 1891 at Cavendish Bridge, Leicestershire, Harry b1893 Radford, Harriett b1895 Radford, May b1899 Radford, Jack b1902 Radford, and Fred b1906 Radford. His father William died in Nottingham in 1905 at aged 46 yrs leaving his widow to bring up their six children. In the 1911 census the family are shown living at 1 Charter Street, Radford, Sarah is 39 yrs a widow and head of the household, she is living with her children , William 20 yrs a packer in a tobacco manufacturers, Harry a labeller in a brewery, Harriett 16 yrs a cleaner in a cotton mill, May 12 yrs a scholar , Jack 9 yrs and Fred 5 yrs.
Harry enlisted into the Army in Nottingham and served with 'A' Coy 2nd battalion, Sherwood Foresters, he was killed in action on 9th August 1915, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium.
His brother Private Charles William Henry Swift enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Radford, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 22nd August 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme France.
