Family History

Born in Sutton in 1893, Clarke was one of the four surviving children of Frederick (a tailor) and Elizabeth Bacon of 17 West End (formerly Smedley’s End). He was a tin worker when he attested in Sutton on 29th February 1916.

Military History

Posted to the Army Reserve, Clarke was posted to the 4th Lincolns (37616) on 4th March 1917. He arrived in France just seventeen days later, on 21st March 1917. On 2nd April 1917, Clarke was admitted to the 3rd General Hospital at Doullens, suffering from valvular disease of the heart. He was evacuated to England on 11th May 1917 and was soon transferred to the 302nd Labour Company. He was serving at the Northern Command Labour Centre at Ripon when he was discharged, no longer physically fit for war service, on 14th November 1917. Clarke died on 19th July 1918.
