John King was born in 1893 in Nottingham and was the son of Edward a general labourer and Harriet King née Maddick and the brother of Lily King. His father Edward was born in 1870 in Nottingham and his mother Harriett Maddock was born in 18971 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1890 in Nottingham and had a further child Lily b1893 in Nottingham In the 1901 census the family were living at Gregory Gardens Nottingham and by the 1911 census they lived at 19 Norton Street Radford Nottingham.
Lance Corporal John King, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and he was killed in action on 13th January 1915. He is buried in Canadian Cemetery No. 2, Neuville-St. Vaast.
Death notification published 1st February 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “KING. – Killed in action, January 13th, [1915] Lance-Corporal J. King, 1st Sherwood Foresters, 19, Norton-street, Radford, aged 22 years.
