John Scotney Hewson was born in 1898 in Nottingham and he was the son of John a cycle polisher and Hannah Hewson née Jackson of 11 Scarcliffe Terrace Radford Nottingham. His father John was born in 1871 in Boston, Lincolnshire and his mother Hannah Jackson was born in 1869 in Nottingham, they were married in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 3 children , sadly one was to die in infancy, their surviving two children were John Scotney b1898 and Richard b1904, both were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Scarcliffe Terrace, Middleton Street, Radford, Nottingham and are shown as John 40 yrs a cycle polisher, he is living with his wife Hannah 42 yrs and there two children John 13 yrs a scholar and Richard 7 yrs a scholar.
Private John Scotney Hewson, enlisted at Nottingham and served with “A” Company, 2/5th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 30th November 1917. He is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
In memoriam published 30th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HEWSON. – In loving memory of Pte. Jack Hewson, aged 20, killed in action November 30th, 1917. – Ever remembered by uncle Tom and auntie Chrissie, Carlton. “HEWSON. – In loving memory of our dear boy, Pte. Jack Hewson, 2/5th North Staffords, killed in action November 30th, 1917.
