Ernest Walter Fiddes was born in 1881 the son of Walter a chair maker and Lucy Fiddes née Wisher. They lived at 55 Thoneywood Mount Nottingham. His father was born in 1856 at Sneinton, his mother in 1856 at Nottingham. They were married in Radford in 1878 and had four other children all born in Nottingham, Betsy b.1879, George b.1883, William b.1885 and David b.1889. Ernest married Kate Hannah Johnson on 3rd August 1903 at St Pauls Church, Nottingham. They lived at 17 Duke Street and later at 10 Orchard Square Ilkeston Road (both Radford Nottingham). They had the following children : - Ethel May 30/12/03, Kate 02/06/06, Walter Macdonald 29/11/07, Lucy 06/01/10, Mabel 30/03/12, Betsy 08/05/14 and Ernest Henry 29/01/17. In 1911 the family was living at 11 Moodey Street Carlton Road Sneinton.
Ernest Fiddes had been a regular soldier and served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. He received gunshot wounds to his left knee and right breast during the Boer War on 12th February 1902 at Klip River and was discharged on 9th October 1902. He again enlisted on 22nd August 1914 at Nottingham aged 34. Ernest was as a reinforcement to his old battalion when he landed in France on 11th November 1914. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 22nd February 1917.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 16th March 1918 : - 'FIDDES. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Cpl. E. Fiddes, killed in action March 16th, 1917, served and was wounded in the South African war. They miss him most who loved him best. – Loving wife and seven children.'
