Leonard William Elkington was born in 1898 and was the son of Annie Elizabeth Elkington, née Stevenson of 10 Baron Street, Old Radfold, Nottingham, and the late John Elkington a colliery carter and brother of Frank Elkington born 1908 at Nottingham. His father John was born in 1870 at Bilborough and his mother Annie Elizabeth Stevenson was also born in 1870 at Bilborough, they were married in Nottingham in 1897. His father died in Nottingham in 1903 , he was 33 yrs old. In 1911 the family lived at 10 Baron Street Radford Nottingham.
Private Leonard William Elkington, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
Death notices published 13th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ELKINGTON. – Killed in action, March 21st, 1918, Pte. L. W. Elkington, Northumberland Fusiliers, aged 19 years, the dearly loved son of Annie and the late L. Elkington, of Radford. Grief only aching hears can know how bitter is the loss. – His loving lonely mother, also Uncle Will, Frank, and Aunt Ada. “ELKINGTON. – Killed in action, March 21st, 1918, Pte. L. W. Elkington, Northumberland Fusiliers. Supreme sacrifice. – From his sorrowing Aunts Edith and Clara, and Uncles Harry (in France), Jack (with the colours), and Jack.” In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 21st March 1919 :- ELKINGTON. – In loving memory of my dear son, Pte. L. W. Elkington, N.F., aged 19, killed in action March 21st, 1918. Could I but clasp his hand and see his smiling face that meant so much to me. – Sadly missed by mother, Will, Frank, aunt Ada. “ELKINGTON. – In loving memory of our dear nephew, L. W.
