Family History

George Herbert Crane was born in 1884 at Kirkcaldy, Fife he was the son of John Innes a draughtsman mechanical engineer and Mary Crane née Robertson and the brother of John, Alex and Robert Crane. John was born in 1851 at Aberdeen, Mary Robertson was born in 1851 at Kirkcaldy they were married in 1881 in Scotland and went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 13 Teversal Avenue Nottingham. John 60 yrs is a draughtsman, he is living with his wife Mary 60 yrs and their 4 children including George 27 yrs a draughtsman.

Military History

Corporal George Crane enlisted at at Liverpool entered theatre after 1 January 1916 and joined 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment). On 5 July 1916 the battalion attacked in three columns to consolidate all ground up to the front line. Close quarter fighting took place for hours but eventually it was obvious that no gains were being made and the battalion was pulled back. George was one of 59 men killed and he has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme. France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
