He was the son of Joseph and Annie Herrett and the brother of Elizabeth Ann, Mabel, Florence, Emma, Maud, Joseph and Annie Herrett. In 1911 the family lived at 79 Mitchell Street and later at 17 Bramcote Street (both Radford Nottingham). John's address upon enlistment was c/o Mr J Spooner, Barton Crossing House, Attenborough.
He enlisted (83041) in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) on 19 November 1915 at Nottingham under Lord Derby's Scheme. He served in the UK until 25 June 1917 and after arriving in France was transferred to the West Kent Regiment on 1 August 1917, one day before his death. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 45 and 47
