Herbert Arthur Jepson was born in 1885 at Nottingham and was the son of Arthur a school attendence officer and Martha Jepson née Mellors of 405 Alfreton Road, Nottingham. His father Arthur was born in 1858 at Radford, Nottingham, his mother Martha Mellors was born in 1856 at Ilkeston they were married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Radford registration district, they went on to have the following children, Gertrude b1881, Ada b1881, Mabel b1887, Herbert Arthur b1885 and Arthur Clarence Leonard Jepson (killed in action 12/10/1916) b1896. In the 1911 census the family are living at 405, Alfreton Road, Nottingham and are shown as Arthur 53 yrs a school attendence officer, he is living with is wife Martha 55 yrs and their children, Herbert 26 yrs an insurance agent and Clarence 15 yrs a student. His probate was proven on 26th November 1918 at Nottingham and shows him as Herbert Arthur Jepson of 405 Alfreton Road, Nottingham, an insurance superintendent died on 9th November 1918 and his estate of £213 2 shillings and 11 pence were left to Arthur Jepson a school superintendent (his father)
Private Herbert Arthur Jepson attested at Nottingham on 11th December 1915, he gave his age as 30 yrs and was living at 405 Alfreton Road, Nottingham, he was an insurance agent, his next of kin was his father Arthur of the same address. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war 11th April 1917 at Derby and posted to the Army Service Corps . On the 1st October 1917 he appeared before a medical board where he was found unfit for military service due to chronic bronchitis and was discharged from the Army on 22nd October 1917 his discharge address was 405 Alfreton Road, Nottingham. He saw no service overseas and died on 9th November 1918 and is buried at Nottingham General Cemetery. He is not recorded on the CWGC
His brother Second Lieutenant Albert Clarence Leonard Jepson enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 3rd battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He landed in France on 29th May 1916 and was attached to the 2nd battalion when he was killed in action on 12th October 1916 and is buried at Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Grave Reference: XXlX.G.1
