Family History

Jabez Smithurst was born in 1893 he was the son of Jabez Wright Smithurst a coal miner hewer and Emma Smithurst née Hallam and the brother of Frank, Ferdinand, Hallam, Ruth Emma, Samuel, Jim, Rose and William Smithurst. Jabez Wright was born in 1867 at Greasley, Emma Hallam was born in 1869 at Brinsley they were married on 22nd March 1890 at St James Church, Brinsley, they went on to have 13 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 24 North Street Ilkeston (later at 60 Marshall Terrace Stanton Hill) Jabez 44 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Emma 42 yrs and 9 of their children including Jabez 18 yrs a coal miner loader.

Military History

Private Jabez Smithurst attested at Mansfield on 19th February 1916 giving his age as 22 yrs and 263 days, he was a coal miner and lived with his father at 60 Marshall Terrace, Stanton Hill. he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 5th June 1917 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters on 7th June 1917. He died on 8th August 1917 of heart valve disease on 8th August 1917 at Cleadon, Sunderland, he saw no overseas service and is buried at St Andrews churchyard, Skegby
